Hey, hive friends! It’s been a minute since our last update in November when we tucked the bees in for winter here at Land of Bees & Honey. The Texas chill (well, what passes for chill here!) kept our colonies snug, but spring’s finally here, and the bees are buzzing back to life. I wanted to pop in with a quick post about what’s happening in the hives as we gear up for our first honey harvest later this year—our little crew’s been busy!

Winter Recap
Back in November, we prepped the hives for the cold—treated for pests, topped off their food stores with sugar syrup, and prepped them to keep the wind out. It’s our first year raising bees, so we were nervous, but the girls made it through like champs. The mild Texas winter helped, and we only lost a handful of days to frost. Every peek we took showed them clustering tight, keeping the queens warm—nature’s teamwork at its best.
Spring Awakening
Now, with March rolling in, the hives are humming again. The first wildflowers—bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush—are popping up around the property, and the bees are all over them. We’ve spotted them hauling in bright yellow pollen, which means the queens are laying eggs and the brood’s growing. It’s a thrill to see those tiny foragers darting back with full pollen baskets—our land’s turning into their buffet!
We’ve been checking the hives weekly since mid-February, making sure they’ve got enough space and no signs of trouble (like pests or disease—fingers crossed, all clear so far). The colonies look strong—frames are filling with new comb, and the bee population’s climbing fast. We even added a few extra supers to give them room to stretch. Spring’s their boom time, and we’re just trying to keep up!
What’s Next
This is our big year—the first honey harvest’s coming, likely late summer or early fall once they’ve packed the frames. We’re keeping it natural, just like our homemade goods—no junk, just pure honey from our bees and this land. I can’t wait to jar it up and share it on landofbeesandhoney.store—stay tuned for that! For now, we’re letting the bees do their thing, soaking up the spring sun and blooms. I’ll try to post more often as we hit milestones—maybe some pics of the hives or a video of the honey flow when it’s time.
